A few months ago, I found this picture of witches’ brooms from Better Homes and Gardens floating around Pinterest. I loved the idea so much I decided to try making my own.
To start, I found a few branches that were similar in diameter to a broom handle, and used a hack saw to cut them to the proper length. For the bristles, I used grass bundles that I found on clearance, and raffia to tie around the bristles.
This project was a bit messy, but only because the “bristles” went everywhere while I was working. I recommend laying down an old sheet to catch all the runaway bristles so you can just shake it off outside when you’re done.
To attach the bristles to the broom handles, I put hot glue onto the branch where I wanted the bristles to go. I then took small handfuls of the bristles and gently pressed them into the hot glue. I went all the way around the branch, then continued layering more hot glue and bristles on top of the first layer of bristles.
The grass bundles I bought were quite long so I cut them in half with scissors prior to attaching them to the broom handle. If your glue gun has a low setting, I recommend using it, as it’s hard to not get your finger tips in the glue a bit while pressing down the bristles.
Once I had all my bristles hot glued to the branch, I tightly wrapped raffia around the bristles several times and tied it off.
This is such a simple project and you really could make it for free using supplies you find outside and whatever string or cording you already have. The brooms themselves are surprisingly sturdy once finished. I used them to decorate our back porch, and walked out later to find my darling children actually using them to sweep the porch.
{On a side note, I apologize for my lack of photos for this project! I made these brooms several weeks ago, and my husband misplaced the memory card from my camera containing all the photos. Today, after having been on my porch for several weeks, I decided to bring the brooms back inside to get a few close up photos of the bristles and how I put it together. I laid a sheet on our kitchen table, and when I placed the brooms on top, several ants dropped out of the brooms and onto the table. After taking care of the ants, I adjusted the brooms and a HUGE spider literally jumped out of one of the brooms. Photo shoot over…the brooms are back outside and I sincerely hope the single photo I managed to salvage is enough for you to get the idea of how they’re made. If you have any questions, just let me know in the comments and I’ll try to help!!}

Cute project and you are hysterical…I would have shutdown the photo shoot too 🙂

Right!? I have no idea why all those creepy crawlers decided to take up residence in those brooms but they can stay outside forever!

My dad used to have this terrible joke. Whenever my mom would complain, he would tell her to “leave her broom at the door.” I know, insulting (but kinda funny..shhh). I should make one of these for my parents front porch!
Canary Street Crafts (Amy) says
Oh my gosh, Rachel, that’s hilarious! You have to make one…it was so easy and that would be so funny!!
AmieJo says
I think that they are great looking and I completely understand why you only have one photo.

Ants and spiders INSIDE freak me it too… So I totally understand 😉 The picture captures them perfectly! Love how you used wrap branches for the sticks!
Canary Street Crafts (Amy) says
Thanks, Kendra!! Bugs don’t typically freak me out, but I totally agree..they belong outside! And spiders shouldn’t be allowed to jump! It was just too much 🙂

Thanks for linking up to Pin Worthy Wednesday, I have pinned your post to the Pin Worthy Wednesday Pinterest Board. Such a fun idea I might make my own broom this year.
Bre @ Average But Inspired says
These brooms are so cute that it’s no wonder you had some friends decide to move in!
Canary Street Crafts (Amy) says
Haha, thanks Bre!! I guess the bugs sort of go with the whole witch theme, but they’re seriously going to have to find a new home after Halloween. I’m not sure how they’d fit in with our Christmas decor if I left them out 🙂

Amy you are so crafty! I love it!! These are so cute! I would love to see what your whole porch looks like. I completely understand shutting things down.. the ants would have been enough for me. Do you have any good recommendations on glue guns? The one I currently have is HORRIBLE!
Amanda @ Dwelling in Happiness says
SOOO cute!! What a great idea to make witches brooms! And I’m SO with you, NO spiders and ants in the house, please!! 🙂
Canary Street Crafts (Amy) says
Exactly! When I’m outside in their home I leave them be, but when they’re in my house all bets are off 🙂

Yep, got the idea without a lot of photos! As a matter of fact my kids and I used your tutorial to make our little witches’ broom over the weekend:) Don’t blame you at all for shutting down the photo shoot. I’d have done the same thing! Thanks for sharing with us at the Teach Me Tuesday Linky Party!
Canary Street Crafts (Amy) says
Thanks for letting me know, Adrian! I’d love to see your little broom! Did you post it on your blog? If so I’d love to check it out! Hope you’re having a great week!
Adrian says
I haven’t gotten around to doing crafts for my blog (not really my forte)! It turned out really cute though and I probably wouldn’t have been able to do it without reading about it first. I’m REALLY bad at crafts:( The stores love me because of it!
Canary Street Crafts (Amy) says
Well I totally understand why you stick to recipes (that bean dip you just shared….YUM!!) I’m glad the broom worked out for you though! Maybe you’re not as bad at crafts as you think 🙂
