We picked up this chest at the thrift a couple months ago. It had quite a few deep knicks and scratches but was otherwise in good condition.
We filled in the knicks with Elmer’s Wood Filler, then sanded it smooth with our favorite sander.
We used Velvet Finishes paint for the first time on this piece. We started with VF Ready, which cleans and deglosses your piece. Next, we painted two coats of VF paint in the color Timeless. I have to say, I really loved this paint. Unlike most chalk paints, I didn’t have to thin it with water and it painted beautifully with a smooth finish.
After painting, we distressed the entire piece with our sander. The original hardware is perfect so we decided to keep it. I contemplated painting them more of a gold color but in the end, I couldn’t bring myself to paint over that gorgeous patina. I think it was the right decision, what do you think?
I finished the piece with VF Enhance. It’s a dark glaze and gave it a really pretty, subtle antiqued look. Enhance can be used as a sealer, but since I’m selling this piece and I’m weird about making sure pieces I sell are well sealed, I decided to throw a coat of GF poly on top.
Isn’t the color beautiful? I really did enjoy this paint and will be using it again. This piece will be headed to our booth later this week.

Amy – you’ve done it again! This dresser is beautiful. We are very interested in trying the deglosser. We are sure this won’t be in your booth for very long!

Thanks ladies! I’m in love with this piece and I feel like my subpar photography skills aren’t doing it justice! This is definitely one that’s going to be hard to part with. The Velvet Finishes paint was awesome and I’ll be using it more often. I think you’d like it too!

That is one gorgeous job…love the color and the little brownish details! Where did you get that paint & did I hear you say it was chalk paint?
Canary Street Crafts (Amy) says
Thank you, Florence. It’s Velvet Finishes paint, and they mailed me some to try specifically for this project. You can find it here: http://www.velvetfinishes.com/shop.html#a_aid=canarystreet&a_bid=147cfdaa. It’s not a chalk paint, but is a low prep furniture paint very similar to chalk paint. I found it to be smoother than chalk paint with less brush strokes and no need to thin with water. I liked the paint a lot and would use it again. Thanks so much for stopping by and taking the time to comment!

Absolutely lovely. The color looks masculine and I imagine it as a man’s bureau from long ago. It’s a nice change from a lot of painted furniture which usually has a more feminine feel since it’s mostly us women who do these things! Love the typewriter and bottle. Makes me visualize it in the home of a writer where every item has it’s own story to tell. Well done!
Canary Street Crafts (Amy) says
Thank you! I also felt like this was a more masculine piece and agree it’s a nice change. I appreciate your comment!

Beautiful job….and you made the right decision keeping the hardware as is. You can’t beat natural patina. Love the trays you have propped up behind the typewriter, too.
Canary Street Crafts (Amy) says
Thanks Jamie! I think keeping the hardware original was the right move too. Some things are just too pretty to paint.
