In Australia, I have found a Cabotts brand of clear varnish, non yellowing at Bunnings. I much prefer the polycrylic (also sold at Bunnings in a spray can), then wax. My only hesitation is that I stumbled with the antique look, however, have thought I could add a substance to another tin of clear varnish that is like a coffee colour – this could produce the same type of effect.

Hi I saw and fell in love with your side table on The Snug and am really looking forward to seeing more of your things. Although I am English I live in Bulgaria and spend a lot of time ‘re-doing’ things over here. Will be visiting your site on a regular basis. Thank you & good luck with your new booth. Wendy

Hi Wendy! Was it the vintage bicycle table? Thanks so much for your sweet words. We’re happy to have a fellow re-doing friend in Bulgaria! I’m so glad you found us. Hope you have a fantastic week!
Wendy Watson says
Hi, yes it was the bicycle table and I just love the french corset dresser, could go on and on, have received much inspiration from your site & can’t wait to make a start again over here. Need to source some chalk paint though but am working on it. regards, Wendy

Beautiful results with the Bondo & appreciate the detailed instructions! I have some experience with refinishing furniture, but have never tried to repair of fill in veneer. This was a helpful tutorial.

Thank you, Florence!
Gail Martin says
Love your tips on chalk painting. I need some advice. I bought a round table (not a kitchen table) for $50. The top is damaged. It looks as if someone was going to refinish it and used a rotary sander and pressed down to hard The finish is marred terribly. I has been sanded below the veneer, but the veneer is not peeling. There is a definite difference. What should I do? Any suggestions are welcome.
Canary Street Crafts (Amy) says
Hi Gail! If the veneer isn’t peeling and there’s just some gouges, without seeing it my guess is it would be easiest just to fill those spots in with wood filler then sand it smooth and paint over it. There’s an elmers color change wood filler that’s my favorite to work with and it sands beautifully. Good luck and let me know how it goes!

Hi Amy and Vicki,
I found your blog while searching for a good way to seal chalk paint. I stuck around and read quite a few entries, and love your ideas and work! Thanks, now I’m on the hunt for an overhead projector to try graphics….:) Thanks for sharing your talents with us!
Canary Street Crafts (Amy) says
Thank you for telling me that, Amy! I hope you’ll stop back again soon. You probably read about it if you browsed around but one of my favorite sealers for chalk paint is General Finishes high performance top coat “flat”. I’m not affiliated with them at all, it’s just what I use and buy myself. Best of luck with your projects!!
