We’re back with another Themed Furniture Makeover Day project. This month our theme is “chocolate”, and our furniture piece is an old sewing cabinet.
We picked up this old sewing cabinet at a yard sale last summer. I don’t think I have a true before pic of the piece, but here’s one I took shortly after I started painting it the first time. (This is the second makeover for this piece. The first one wasn’t selling in our booth so we decided to try again).

The initial makeover was done in Graphite, which is a dark, charcoal gray color. This time we decided to switch gears and go with our old reliable white, or “white chocolate”, if you will :). We also decided to nail the top shut, and as soon as it’s warm enough to pull our saw out, we’re going to add a shelf to the inside before it goes back in the booth. We felt one of the reasons it wasn’t selling is because it was very obviously a sewing cabinet, and maybe people weren’t seeing the potential as an accent table. Adding a usable shelf will hopefully make it more functional.
Here’s what it looked like after a couple coats of Annie Sloan Old White chalk paint, and some light distressing.
Kinda boring, right? We found this paper at JoAnn’s, and used it to decoupage the front. I then used Annie Sloan chalk paint in Coco to accent the details on the table. I painted the Coco around all the details with a small artist’s brush, then used a damp rag to wipe some of it off. You can see the Coco paint on the inside and outside edge of the decoupaged area in this photo. The knobs are from Hobby Lobby.
And here’s what it looks with the doors open (minus the shelf we intend to add). I sealed the whole piece with GF “flat” top coat.
I did decoupaging on last month’s Themed Furniture Makeover Day project too. You can find that project here if you’d like to see it.

Love this piece! I have my mother’s old sewing cabinet upstairs right now. You’ve given me just the nudge I needed to give it a refresh. Love the way the inset and paint color soften the piece. It will fit with just about any decor. Great job, ladies. XOXO..Susie from The Chelsea Project

Thanks, Cat! This one was missing the shelf/hardware that holds the machine but I bet you could find a nice one pretty easily. Thanks so much for stopping by!

This is gorgeous! I don’t know why people have a hard time seeing an old sewing machine cabinet as a side table. I have had that happen too. I love them for that purpose! I bet this will sell in no time now. 🙂

Thank you, Christy! I hope so :).

Love this — it’s so pretty!! Sewing cabinets make awesome tables. We have one in our dining room and are using one as a nightstand. You can typically find them for a good price and they’re real wood, so it’s a win-win! Thanks for sharing! Cynthia

Thank you, Cynthia! I love the idea of repurposing them as nightstands and accent tables. I bet yours are gorgeous :).

I love the new look! The paper you put on the front is perfect and the CoCo color really accents the details on the legs. I’m sure it will sell in no time!

Ok now you’ve got me wanting to shop for old sewing cabinets! 😉 I love this in white and with the decoupage paper. The shelf will totally make this a usable table – I have no doubt it will sell quickly!
Paula@SweetPea says
I had no idea that this was a sewing table until I read it in your post. I think that with the new paint and the addition of a shelf that this will sell. I like the decoupaged doors, too.

It turned out gorgeous and I love how you are like us here in Michigan. “when the weather gets warm we will cut a shelf” Oh those who don’t understand not being able to just walk outside and cut something.
Hopefully it will get warmer for the both of us.
Hugs,
Karin
