Can I let you in on a little secret? I have an obsession with door wreaths. I have dozens already, yet I just can’t stop making them. I’ve been trying to talk the hubs into build a rack in the basement to hang my collection of wreaths, but he’s not feeling it. Maybe if I make a few more it’ll convince him to build that rack :).
I love the look of magnolia leaves, especially paired with burlap. For this wreath, I used artificial magnolia leaves, but if you have access to a magnolia tree you could use real leaves.
I’m using an 18″ straw wreath form because it’s what I had on hand, but a foam wreath form would work just as well. I decided to leave the plastic on the straw wreath, just because I was going to cover it with burlap anyway, and I thought it might help hold it’s form.
I wrapped burlap garland around the wreath form. Once I got all the way around the wreath, I cut the garland and used hot glue to attach the end. {Note: once the leaves are attached to the wreath and it’s hanging on a door, you really can’t see much of the burlap. I just wanted the base to look nice in case it was visible from certain angles, but if you’re in a pinch, you could probably do without it.}
I purchased stems of artificial magnolia leaves from Hobby Lobby, and removed the individual leaves from the stems (they pop right off). I ended up using 5 stems for my 18″ wreath. They were originally $5 each, but I got them on sale for 50% off.
Start layering the leaves on top of the burlap wrapped wreath form, using hot glue to attach the leaves to the wreath. Magnolia leaves have a green front and a brown back. I decided to use only the green side up, but I think it would also be pretty to turn some of the leaves over to incorporate some brown ones.
Do not glue the entire leaf to the wreath form. Only put glue on the back of the bottom half of the leaf, letting the top half flare out from the wreath a bit.
When you make it all the way around the wreath, glue the last row of leaves underneath the first row so it’s seamless all the way around. Once you’ve gone all the way around the wreath, look for any spots that look a little thin and glue an extra leaf or two in those spots if needed.
I made a bow for the bottom of the wreath, and decided to add an “E” as well. (Our last name starts with E). I just purchased a wooden E from Michael’s, and painted it to match the bow. I tied a strip of ribbon around the top of the wreath, then slipped the top part of the E through the ribbon so it would hang down in the center of the wreath.
I’m still not 100% sure if I like it better with or without the E. What do you think?
I love the clean look of this magnolia leaf wreath. It’s really versatile and would look great during any season. I’m planning to keep it on our front door for the rest of the summer and into the fall. What’s your favorite front door decor?

I grew up in the South and have a special place in my heart for Magnolias. But I now live in the PNW, so I don’t have any close by. I think I may need to have my mom send me some in the mail to make this gorgeous wreath. I LOVE it!! Thanks for sharing!

Have you ever read Kelle Hampton’s blog (Enjoying The Small Things)? She moved from Michigan to Florida and her family sends her a giant box of leaves every fall so her kids can play in the leaves :). You should definitely have your mom send you a box! This would be so pretty with real leaves, plus it’ll be like a little piece of your old home on your front door!

I’ve never really thought of using door wreaths other than at Christmas, but I do love how they look. I love the simplicity of this design, but incredibly stylish too.
