We’re back with another Monthly DIY Challenge. This month’s featured challenge item: FAT Paint!
I buy and sell a lot of used furniture, but every once in a while I find a piece that I just can’t bear to part with. This dresser is one of those pieces.
You might be able to see in the picture below that it had a ton of minor damage. Knicks and scratches all over it, some of them quite deep. I filled the deep ones and sanded the smaller ones out. There was originally a mirror attached as well. But overall the piece was in really great shape. The coolest thing about it though was the surprise hiding inside.
The very bottom of the dresser is solid, but there’s a split in the wood. We bought it at a thrift store, and as we set it down in my living room the key to the lock on the top drawer dropped out of that opening underneath and onto the carpet. I’ve picked up several pieces with locking drawers, but never have I found an original key still with the piece. Pretty cool, huh? I kept imagining how many times it must have been moved before it landed in my living room and can’t believe the key didn’t fall out before then.
I had a feeling this piece was going to bleed, and unfortunately, I was really, really right. I gave a couple coats of Zinsser 123 and the dresser basically laughed in my face and bled right through it. Several coats of Zinsser Bulls Eye Shellac finally did the trick.
The dresser was painted with two different colors of FAT Paint: Warm White on the drawers and Gull Grey on the frame. I really love the color combination and think they compliment each other nicely.
I wasn’t going to distress it at first, but I was smoothing out the last layer of paint before sealing it and decided to give the sander free reign for a bit. The FAT Paint Company Clear Top Coat was used to seal the entire piece. I kept the original hardware because I thought it was gorgeous.
There are a couple cool things going on over at The FAT Paint Company right now. First, they’re looking for new retailers. If you’re interested in potentially carrying the FAT Paint line, or know someone who would be a great fit, you can find more info here. The FAT Paint Company is giving away $200 cash to anyone who helps them connect with a new retailer, so be sure to spread the word and possibly make a little extra cash for yourself. Want to see if there’s a FAT retailer near you? Click here.
Additionally, we’re partnering with TFPC to give away a pint of FAT paint in the color of your choice and a small 50g of Natural FAT Wax. Giveaway is open to US and Canada. Enter using the rafflecopter below.

I don’t know why I didn’t think to add a photo of the key! I had to put it up because my 4 year old kept taking it and I was afraid he’d lose it :). I’ll take one and update the post later this afternoon.

You did it again! Your makeovers are always so on point! And great tip about the shellac primer. I’ve had a few things bleed through no matter what – so next time I will try that.
