This project is a super simple tutorial for adding detail to furniture projects with washi tape. We used it to add a pop of color to the drawer on this little white table, and wanted to show you how easy it is.

You’ve heard of washi tape, right? It’s pretty, decorative tape that can be used in all types of craft projects. You can find washi tape at pretty much any craft store or on Amazon. Here’s some variety packs that are similar to what we have*.
After painting this table white and doing a little distressing, we still felt like it needed a little something to make it special.
We found this pretty aqua washi tape* in our stash, and decided it was perfect to easily add some detail to the sides of the drawers. We simply cut and taped the washi tape to the sides of the drawers, then mod podged over it. Fast and super easy.
We used a similar technique on these stacking tables we sold in our booth a few months ago. After painting them black and white we still felt like they needed something.
We ran a strip of washi tape across the edge.
We then used a fine grit sanding block to lightly sand the edge of the table. This cuts the tape right at the edge of the table and makes it easy to peel off the overhang.
You can use mod podge or some sort of decoupage medium, or something like a poly to seal the washi tape and keep it from peeling off.
It’s just another option when you’re looking for ideas to make your furniture pieces unique. If you decide to use washi tape on one of your projects I’d love to see a picture! Hope you have a fantastic weekend.

What a great idea! We love your choice of the aqua pattern. A great color, design and a nice surprise when the drawers are opened! We especially love the tape with the graphics. Your sanding tip is genius! Thanks for sharing!

I keep seeing washi tape everywhere, but I have never used any. It’s so pretty. I really like the detail you added to the side of the drawer. I must ask, though…did you line up the pattern on the washi tape so it looks continuous on the side of the drawer? The washi tape isn’t as wide as the drawer is it?
Once again, nice work! Thanks for the tips on mod podging too! Good to know it works well over the tape (in case I decide to get some. 🙂

Hey Kelli! We did not line up the design on the washi tape. If you look closely at the 5th picture you can kinda see it’s actually 5 pieces of tape. From afar you can’t really tell and it all pretty much flows together. Thanks so much for stopping by!

That is SO clever!!! Was it hard to line up the pattern on the tape? Pinning and sharing! Love this!!!

Thanks Erin! I didn’t line up the patterns and you can’t really tell unless you’re looking for it. Maybe because it’s so thin? I’m glad you like it!

This is such a fun idea! I have SO much washi tape (occupational hazard!), I think all of my drawers are going to get the surprise washi treatment ; )

Such a great idea and looks beautiful !
I’ve never used washi tape and I’ve never mod podged a thing in my life – time to start I think !!!

What CREATIVE stinkin’ cute ideas for washi tape!! I am never happy with the way the sides of my drawers look on furniture I’ve refinished. Obviously, with paint I can’t paint down the sides of the frawers, but when they are open, they look awful! I’m doing that one for SURE! The stacking tables are made so much more eye catching with the addition of simply…washi tape! You two get the washi tape of the year award!!!

I used Annie Sloan chalk paint on these pieces. You can find stores that sell it in your area by going to this page: http://www.unfolded.com/find-stockist/
